Vinil Mathew says, “The film is about two misfits and explores the unconventional behaviour of normal people in seemingly ordinary situations, which makes it unique.” He adds that working with Karan and the Phantom team was like having the best of both worlds, as they make great producers. The lead characters, who are poles apart in nature, still vibe and that makes the love story relatable and aspirational.” Vikas Bahl adds, “This has been one of the most satisfying experiences for me because I have always believed in the characters that Vinil created and it has been a kickass script from the time I heard it three years ago.” On his part, Anurag Kashyap sums up saying, “The film is not your run-off-the-mill love story and in that lies its USP.” Karan Johar says, “The film has a slice-of-life humour and true-to-life romance. The album is reflective of the feel-good genre that the film is associated with.” The music directors said, “We wanted to create compositions that had something for everyone. Shake It Like Shammi to the foot-tapping Punjabi Wedding Song, the melodious Vishal-Shekhar have composed an eclectic mix of songs, from the peppy Meeta helps Nikhil find his bearings and frees him from living a life for others and find happiness for himself. Thus, he is often pressured to confirm to others expectations especially fiancée Karishma. In the midst of this confusion, the truth of relationships is unfolded the strength of unions is tested and love triumphs.Nikhil ( Sidharth Malhotra): Nikhil is an optimist and ever willing to do things for others, even if his heart is not in it. During the course of Meeta's stay at Nikhil's house, they come close to each other and open up to each other. In an attempt to please Karishma he decides to keep Meeta in the flat above his own house, with his crazy extended family. Nikhil is re-introduced to Meeta by Karishma and is instructed to put her up in a hotel.
On the day of his engagement, Nikhil promises Karishma that he will prove himself to be worthy of her within the next seven days. Karishma's wealthy father, Devesh Solanki, does not approve of Nikhil as he finds him to be a lackadaisical young man. The film jumps to the eve of Nikhil and Karishma's engagement. He falls in love with Meeta's sister Karishma on the same day. Nikhil bumps into Meeta on the occasion of her sister Deeksha's wedding while Meeta is on the run.
Spread across Mumbai over a decade, the film is about the relationship between the quirky, rebellious Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) and the mischievous Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra) struggling with their respective families to fit in.
